As of June 1, 2020, campervan rentals made through the Fat Llama platform are no longer covered by Fat Llama’s insurance.
What This Means for Lenders
You can still list and rent out your campervan through Fat Llama.
Fat Llama will facilitate payments and verify borrowers’ identities and financial viability.
However, borrowers are not insured under Fat Llama’s guarantee.
Fat Llama does not verify whether a borrower's driving license is valid for campervan rental.
As the lender, it is your responsibility to ensure that the borrower has a valid driving license and appropriate insurance before renting out your vehicle.
How to Protect Your Campervan Rental
To safeguard your vehicle and rental experience, consider the following:
1. Get Self-Drive Hire Insurance
Some insurers offer policies that allow campervan owners to legally rent out their vehicles. Companies such as Camperbug provide self-drive hire insurance options.
2. Verify the Borrower’s Driving License
Request a photo of the borrower’s driving license.
Check that the dates are valid and the license covers campervan rental.
3. Encourage Borrowers to Obtain Short-Term Insurance
Borrowers can purchase temporary insurance through providers such as:
TempCover
DayInsure
Borrower Responsibilities
Borrowers are solely responsible for:
Any penalties incurred during the rental period (e.g., parking fines, congestion charges).
Ensuring they have adequate insurance to cover their rental.
By following these steps, you can help ensure a smooth and secure rental experience.
